At the end of 2006, two Gloucestershire market towns joined forces to form the Fairford and Lechlade Business Club to help and promote the numerous and varied businesses trading in this part of the Cotswolds. In this picturesque corner of rural England, you would expect members of Fairford and Lechlade Business Club (FLBC) to be guest house proprietors, restaurant owners and hoteliers, but the Club can also boast amongst its membership accountants, advertisers, beauty therapists, builders, butchers, car maintenance, carpenters, cleaners, computer experts, dentists, equestrian, estate agents, events management, financial advisers, fisheries, furniture manufacturers, landscape gardeners, locksmiths, marketing consultants, mediators, opticians, pharmacists, photographers, plumbers, publicans, publishers, restaurateurs, retailers, roof tilers.
Many outside observers have commented on the Club’s extraordinary success in its first year and there are now nearly 70 paid up members in the Club including large organisations such as the Cotswold Water Park Four Pillars Hotel, RAF Charitable Trust Enterprises and St James’ Place Wealth Management.
Fairford and Lechlade Business Club wanted to recognise and applaud the achievements of local entrepreneurs and their enterprises, so introduced an award for the “Business of the Year 2007” and “Business Person of the Year 2007”. The first ever Awards Ceremony Dinner for the Fairford and Lechlade Business Club Business of the Year and Business Person of the Year took place at the beginning of February 2008 at Douglas Bader House, home to the Royal International Air Tattoo.
Over 60 people from businesses throughout the Fairford and Lechlade area were present to see local Cotswolds MP, Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, present the 2007 Business Person of the Year award to Junab Ali, owner of Jaflong Indian Restaurant in Lechlade, and the Business of the Year award to The Christmas Shop in Lechlade, run by husband and wife team, Wayne and Judy Hurt. Winners received a framed certificate and bottle of champagne.
