18 months since its re-opening after a £1.3 million re-furbishment, the Fairford Community Centre goes from strength to strength. The former Fairford Free School, a Grade II listed building dating back to 1738, was repurchased in 2002 jointly by Fairford Town Council and the Parochial Church Council of St. Mary’s Church. Thanks to major grants from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Rural Renaissance Fund, and donations from local people, the building has been improved, extended and made fully disabled-accessible. An amazing transformation has taken place, resulting in a building which, in addition to rooms available for local activities and services, has Town Council and Parish offices, Information room, Visitor reception and Youth activity areas, Heritage room, and an Archive room housing the Fairford Archive, managed by Fairford History Society. Fairford’s fully modernized 21st Century Community Centre, situated next door to the Grade I listed St Mary’s Church with its world famous stained glass windows, really lends itself to functions such as wedding receptions, christening parties and wakes, but is also suitable for conferences, small groups, activities and meetings. The old school playground has been up-dated and has become an elegant alfresco entertainment area accessed by a glazed corridor, which links the old building with the new. There is a modern kitchen and all rooms have access to refreshment facilities. The Centre is fully insured and licensed for music and dancing and the consumption of alcohol, and there is ample free parking nearby. There are 6 lettable rooms, varying in size from a small meeting room to large rooms which will accommodate 100 or more, and there is also a large office suitable for business meetings. Rooms can be booked by the hour or for longer periods at prices ranging from £3 to £15 per hour, depending on size, and there are concessionary rates for locals and for regular bookings. Commercial rates on application. If you are interested in a large or small meeting room, or an office, or a venue for a private or public function, or just want to look round, these can be arranged any weekday morning via the office in the front of the centre.
