The Water Meadows Walk – 1.5 or 2.5 miles
Starting from the Eight Bells Public House in London Road, follow the alley way at the side of the pub. At the end of this short path cross the road called Keble Lawns and continue straight ahead along the narrow passageway between Beaumoor Place and Keble Lawns. A gate provides access to a small meadow, keep to the left hand side and head to another gate that exits onto a leafy lane. Go straight ahead down this lane for almost half a mile, passing Fairford football ground on your left. The path bears right just before a mound on the left, this is the site of the former railway station which closed in 1962.
At the end of the mounds, a large lake (a former gravel pit) comes into view. There is a wide variety of waterfowl found here – the species seen depending on the season.
At this point there is a choice of two walks of different lengths.
Option 1 For a shorter route, turn right at the junction of paths so the lake is on the left hand side and follow the hedge line on the right hand side. Continue along the path until you see a small bridge over a ditch, cross over the bridge and this brings you to the banks of the River Coln.
Option 2 For the longer walk, turn left at the junction of paths and follow the path through a tree lined lane until it opens out into the meadow around the lake. Continue around the lake, the path is usually marked by vehicular tracks until a metal gate comes into view. Turn right just in front of this gate and follow the ditch on the left hand side until a bridge crosses over to bring you to the banks of the River Coln.
The two options now follow the same route back towards Fairford by following the course of the river on the left hand side. After approx half a mile there is a farm track ford, turn right in front of the hedge and through the kissing gate into Snake Lane, a tree lined lane. At the end, turn left into a drive and then right at the road (Moor Lane). Continue along the pavement to its end and follow a path to the right of No 5 Moor Lane Court. This leads to London Road (A417), turn right and The Eight Bells will shortly appear on the right.
